Product Description

A two seat open boat that is light enough to be handled by a single person.

It seemed very wobbly for the first 100 yards but then we got used to it and by the end of the afternoon were overtaking other canoes.

Mike T.

This is a fast touring wooden canoe with a fine bow and deep Vee hull for excellent tracking.

The Indian open canoe is suitable for choppy water. It can be built in 3 days.

The Indian is a lightweight wooden canoe with a quick turn of speed making it perfect for a couple to go day touring or for extended solo trips. The boat has built in buoyant chambers thus there is no requirement for additional buoyancy bags.

The basic boat is without seats leaving space for it to be fitted out to your own specification.

The kit includes:

  • Pre-cut wooden panels with pre-cut joints
  • Epoxy resin
  • Epoxy activator
  • Epoxy fillers
  • Woven glass fabric
  • Woven glass tape
  • Ties
  • Comprehensive building manual
  • Free technical support from a competent builder

The following additional options are available: Seats, kneeling thwarts, sailing thwart, mast step, mast, sail, leeboard, motor mounts, white water protection kit.

Study manual

This is intended for pre-build study or to help with the decision to purchase. Reading this manual will help you decide whether or not you can build the boat. It is the 35 page manual that accompanies the kits. It describes all the techniques that will be used during the building and also a step by step guide to construction. Scale drawings are used throughout as well as photographs of critical jobs.

If, later, you decide to purchase the kit the cost of this printed manual will be deducted from the kit price.

This manual does not contain the plans of the panels with the cutting instructions so it is not possible to build the boat from scratch using only this manual.

PDF Version

An electronic, non paper, version of the 35 page study manual above that can be viewed only using Adobe Reader.

After credit card authorisation the file will be sent to the email address put on the order form. The file is about 970 KB and takes about 50 seconds to download on slow broadband.

Protective Glass Layer

Glass fabric to cover the outside of the Indian canoe. This give a greater abrasion resistance and should be considered if the boat is likely to be used near rocky shores.

If the boat is to be used on inland waterways such as canals or the Broads this is not necessary. If it is to be used in the Lake District or the sea this gives peace of mind. The fabric is transparent when coated in epoxy thus the grain of the wood can be seen if the boat is varnished.

This is only available when purchasing a kit because additional epoxy will have to be included in the kit. If purchasing separately from a kit please select 7 metres of fabric and 1.5 kg of epoxy in the ‘Other Products’ section.

The boat (a Canadian canoe) pictured on the car has this layer.
