Product Description

These kayak designs were developed in response to a growing constituency of skilled paddlers seeking waterborne sports cars for racing, exercise, or just plain fun.

Faster and lighter than everyone thinks!

Y.D.

Starting with a clean sheet of paper, we sought out all of the features that make kayaks fast and combined them with proven construction methods, creating two very exciting and beautiful kit boats in the process.

The ends of the Pax 18 and 20 are nearly plumb for maximum waterline length (the heels of the stems are rounded to shed race-killing weed or kelp). Substantial flare is worked into the stem and stern above the waterline to gain buoyancy for work in waves. This extra volume also helps to reduce ‘squatting’ at sprint speeds. Both boats have extremely narrow waterlines, 15-17″ (38-43 cm) depending upon crew weight, which translates into effortless speed in the hands of a skilled paddler. Tracking is solid. Narrow boats can be a handful when surfing at speed, even for experts, so a retractable skeg is standard in the kits.

Narrow boats can also be cramped, but large-statured paddlers are accommodated by specifying 31″ (79 cm) long coamings and highly cambered decks for footroom. The aft decks are flat and feature a standard 8-inch rubber hatch for storage.

Construction is as light as is consistent with hard usage. Bottom panels are 4mm, while the sides and decks are 3mm, and the entire hull and deck are fibre glassed for strength and stiffness. Four structural bulkheads (two of them watertight) are standard. The smoothly radiused decks incorporate a flush stringer for strength and beauty.

The kits include:

What else do I need?

Pax 18

The Pax 18 is the smaller boat, suited only to paddlers weighing a maximum of 175 pounds (79 kg). The hull flares from a razor thin waterline to 21″ (53.3 cm) or 10% of overall length. Thanks to the strong flare, most paddlers will find the Pax 18 far more stable than its speed would suggest.

Pax 20

The Pax 20 is best suited to strong paddlers who have found themselves limited by ‘hull speed’ in a smaller boat. With an 11″ (28 cm) deep cockpit and enough footroom for shoe size 11's (46), most long-legged paddlers should be comfortable.

While the Pax 20 is only 19.5″ (49 cm) wide, primary and secondary stability are surprisingly friendly due to the hard chines and long immersed length.

Plans and manual (not required by kit purchasers)

These plans and manual contain sufficient information on the cutting of the panels to make it possible to build the boat from scratch rather than a kit. This is an easy boat to build from the plans.

PDF plans and manual

This option is to download the complete plans and manual for building the Pax kayaks in PDF format. You will need access to a printer/plotter capable of printing a ARCH-D size sheets (36″ × 24″ or 914 × 609 mm) in order to build the boat using these plans.

After credit card authorisation a download link will be sent to the email address put on the order form.

Study manual

This is intended for pre-build study or to help with the decision to purchase. This is the comprehensive manual that accompanies the kit; reading it will help you decide whether or not you can build the boat. It describes all of the techniques that will be used during the build and also a step by step guide to construction. Scale drawings are used throughout as well as photographs of critical jobs.

If, later, you decide to purchase the kit the cost of this will be deducted from the kit price.

The manual does not contain the cutting instructions so it is not possible to build the boat from scratch using only this.

PDF study plans

These study plans are intended to give you an overview of the construction of the boat. They are in PDF format that can be viewed using Adobe Reader. There are two pages and they measure 279 × 216 mm (11″ × 8½″). They can be printed for carrying around.

After credit card authorisation the plans will be sent to the email address put on the order form.

When you have studied the plans, your next step might be to order the printed instruction manual, which will walk you through the project step-by-step.
